Overcoming Adversity Scholarship (In honor of Jim Matchefts)

Missouri Scholarship & Loan Foundation is pleased to announce a unique opportunity to recognize and reward the hard work of a student who has overcome adversity in their pursuit of postsecondary education. The scholarship is in honor of Jim Matchefts, who retired as MOHELA’s General Counsel and has dedicated his career to ensuring that students get to and through college.

  • $5,000 per year (renewable) to help a student through their college journey
  • Overcoming Adversity Scholarship in honor of Jim Matchefts, who is retiring after 25 years in the higher education community. Jim has been an advocate for students from low-income backgrounds though his work at MOHELA and on the Boards for MSLF and MOCAN. Also, Jim previously served as General Counsel at MDHEWD. He has advocated for many years to help reduce barriers for students.
  • Students must share their story on how they have overcome major life barriers and will go to college in fall 2022
  • Missouri resident
  • 2022 high school graduate
  • Pell eligible (Student’s EFC range as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will factor into decision. Student must upload a copy of their Student Aid Report)
  • Attending a 4-year Missouri higher education institution or State Technical College for the 2022-2023 academic year

This scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years. Recipients must continue to meet the eligibility requirements, maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50, and otherwise maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by your school.

Award recipients will be notified by mid-July 2022.

If this award is used for educational expenses that are not required for your academic program, such as housing, meals or transportation, your scholarship may be considered taxable income. You should consult your tax advisor about your specific situation
If awarded the scholarship, the amount may be reduced if your unmet need (i.e., your Cost of Attendance minus other scholarships and grants) is less than the scholarship.
