William J. Beatty Scholarship

The William J. Beatty Scholarship was established by Mr. Beatty with the following parameters: “shall be awarded to students or graduates of Sumner High School for the purpose of pursuing college or university work…. it being my wish that the scholarship go to a different person…of African descent… each year.”

Eligibility

  1. graduating senior or graduate of Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri
  2. African American
  3. currently enrolled or planning to enroll full time in an accredited U.S. college or university

Selection
The scholarship will be evaluated on the basis of the student’s

  • past academic performance and promise for success in college,
  • the quality of the essay, and
  • the strength of the recommendations.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please answer all questions that apply to you, even if they are not marked “required."

Notification
Application status will be changed from submitted to either awarded or denied in June. Applicants can view their status by logging in to their Scholarship Central account.

The transcript should show your name, school, grades, and cumulative GPA. If you previously uploaded an earlier transcript, please upload a new transcript to your General Application and change your answer to the GPA question. SCHOLARSHIP CENTRAL SECOND RECOMMENDATION: Enter the name and e-mail address of an instructor, counselor, advisor, supervisor or other similarly qualified individual who will submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf. NOTE: As the applicant, it is your responsibility to inform that person to watch for an email sent on your behalf that will explain how to complete this process.
