Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial "Everybody Matters" Essay Scholarship
The Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial “Everybody Matters” Essay Scholarship is open to the dependent children of employees of Barry-Wehmiller companies. Up to ten $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students to be mailed to the two or four-year nonprofit college, university, or trade school the student attends in the United States or Canada.
Eligibility
- be a dependent of a current employee of Barry-Wehmiller Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
- submit a fully completed application, including the contact information for a letter of recommendation, and all required supporting documentation by the April 15 deadline
- enroll full-time as an undergraduate at a nonprofit college, university, or trade school in the United States or Canada.
High school seniors, recent high school graduates, and current college students are encouraged to apply. Applicants may apply for both the Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial Need-Based Scholarship and the Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial “Everybody Matters” Essay Scholarship but may not receive both.
Selection
Applications will be evaluated based on
- past academic performance and potential for continued success as demonstrated on the applicant’s transcript,
- the strength of the essay, and
- supportive recommendations from a teacher, counselor, or supervisor.
Selection of the recipients and the scholarship amount will be determined by the St. Louis Community Foundation from information provided by the applicant, the school, and the recommender. The Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial Scholarship Advisory Committee will make recommendations to the Community Foundation about the strength of the essays. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please answer all questions that apply to you, even if they are not marked “required.” The following information will be shared with Barry-Wehmiller: name, contact information, and college for those selected for awards.
NotificationApplication status will be changed from submitted to either offered or denied in June. Applicants can view their status by logging in to their Scholarship Central account. The scholarship check with a cover letter that includes the parameters of the program will be mailed in early August to the post-secondary institution the recipient attends.
The Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial “Everybody Matters” Essay Scholarship is a one-year award. Recipients may apply annually by completing a new application, including a new essay, in subsequent undergraduate years. Each year’s application will be evaluated independent of previous status.
The Marjorie E. Chapman Memorial Scholarship Program is administered by the St. Louis Community Foundation. Eligibility, award recipients, and award amount will be determined by the St. Louis Community Foundation.

- ESSAY: Drawing upon Barry-Wehmiller’s extensive variety of content about its Truly Human Leadership philosophy (Bob Chapman’s Everybody Matters book, TrulyHumanLeadership.com blog, Everybody Matters podcast, BarryWehmiller.com, and BW’s digital channels, including YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram), as well as your own personal experience, write an essay (500-1000 words) on one of the following topics/questions: A. Write a profile of a leader in your life—a teacher, coach, mentor, etc.—who practices Truly Human Leadership. Support your essay with examples of how this person is a people-centric leader; or B. What are your responsibilities as a community member, and how might you incorporate people-centric leadership ideals to make an even bigger impact? Essays should not include any names that identify the applicant or the parent who is a Barry-Wehmiller employee.
- To be considered for this scholarship, your Scholarship Central General Application MUST include your FALL transcript for the current academic year. The transcript should show your name, school, grades, and cumulative GPA. If you previously uploaded an earlier transcript, please upload a new transcript to your General Application and change your answer to the GPA question. If your college choice has changed, please update that on the General Application as well.
